Living Documents

(2017-2020)

Five looping performance installations by Vienna-based Charlotta Ruth and Dominik Grünbühel, with invited choreographers Anna Öberg, Peter Mills and Jenni-Elina von Bagh.

I was invited as composer, sound designer, programmer and co-creator of the five installations.

I created a number of looping recording devices, a multichannel orchestral piece, a sound installation with separate headphone tracks and a wireless touch-responsive multichannel system from milk cartons, using a mixture of SuperCollider and bash scripting on Raspberry Pi’s.

All systems are available in the Living Documents source repository for the code reader.

  • Lotta typing on a white box below a leafy recording helmet, and a LED matrix showing the text 'space report'
Lotta's loop involved music composition, setting up a leafy recording helmet, programming of a keyboard-typing sequencer playing back to a LED matrix.
  • Elina in blonde wig in a theatre space, white floor, scattered elements, a transparent plastic foil and faint smoke in the air.
Elina's loop had a slow orchestral piece combined with a glitchy magician's rumba and some doomy disco music.
  • Two milk carton speakers inside, in front of a brick wall
Peter's piece was made for a touch reactive speaker box with five milk-carton satellites, sporting wireless communication of musical data using a custom SuperCollider system
  • Dominik lying on a stone floor surrounded by bamboo structure, in front of a video screen showing him lying on a stone floor.
For Dominik's piece, I made a special cowboy waltz, and assisted in some very involved Raspberry Pi video networking.
  • Three boxes with pillows, each having its own pair of headphones. On the closest pillow you can read the embroidered word ANTHROPOLOGY.
Anna's piece was made for stereo speakers and three individual commentary tracks played back on headphones.
